The Lisse Research Center in the Netherlands has recently developed a new type of plastic composite packaging called MAP, which can significantly extend the shelf life of flower bulbs and perennials.
This package contains a special plastic film that has low oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability. Its principle is very simple: use the respiration of the plant inside the package, so that the oxygen content of the package is reduced, so that the chance of plant germination to a minimum. This film is also impermeable to water, so it can ensure that the plants in the package do not lose moisture.
Preliminary studies have shown that this kind of MAP packaging with special film can extend the storage period of perennial plants from 3 weeks to 8-9 weeks.
