Dow discloses new olefin block copolymers

Dow Chemical's Insite catalyst technology has produced a new class of olefin block copolymers (OBCs) that are claimed to challenge EVA and styrenic block copolymers and can even challenge TPV in some applications.

This Infuse OBC polymer incorporates the company's fusion and calcium company's very special Insite catalysts with a new type of polymeric component: a chain shifter that can combine high-melting hard segment polymers with tough polymers in a continuous process. The soft segments of the object are combined on a single segment.

This tough olefin polymer demonstrates performance that is difficult to achieve using current olefin polymerization techniques. Shao Ink 75 grade Infuse and traditional random ethylene copolymers have a 50-60 °C increase in melting point and crystallization temperature.

Its permanent deformation properties are similar to those of styrene block copolymers and its compressive deformation properties are close to some TPVs.

Dow is piloting in Freeport, Texas, and will distribute samples to select end-user companies. The commodity grade is expected to be launched later this year.

Dow announced that it has signed a joint research agreement with Mitsui Chemicals to develop a catalyst system for OBC production, which will help expand the potential applications of this new class of polymers. (Translated by the Chief Executive)
