An experiment for infant preferences
There is clear evidence that children over the age of two are more interested in toys that are more "matching" their gender in their impressions. Research on smaller babies relies on interpreting the visual behavior of babies in the laboratory environment when they see pictures of toys or toys.
So, in our study with the University College London, our goal was to find out whether the sex-labeled toys were equally appealing to young boys and girls.
Our research ranges from 9-month-old infants to 32-month-old children. We chose this age range because children in this age range can move independently to show their interests, and they are in the process of learning about gender-growth. With the consent of the parents, we chose a London nursery with a multicultural background to conduct experiments, not in their own homes or in our labs, because the presence of parents may affect their behavior.
Before choosing the toys used in this study, we conducted a survey of adults in London and asked them “If you want to buy a toy for a little boy or girl, what do you think first?†Finally we The consensus in the survey was that toys for boys included excavators, cars and balls, while toys for girls included dolls , kitchen toys and pink teddy bears . Our previous research also showed that the color of the toy will also affect the child's preferences. We have added a blue teddy bear to the list to see if the boy would prefer the blue teddy bear.
The lab did this: at a distance of one meter from the child, the toys were placed in a semicircle and the children needed to move independently to the toy they were interested in to make a choice. Then we recorded the time each child played each toy.
Our data comes from tests of 47 little girls and 54 little boys. The results show that children of different genders have a significant and overwhelming preference for toys of their own gender. When we divide the results into smaller groups according to the age of the subjects to correspond to different stages of their perception of gender, the results are still the same.
The gender preference of gifts is influenced by both physical and social norms.
In the youngest infant group (9-12 months of babies), we found that all boys prefer to play with the ball. The time the boys played the ball took up half of all their time playing with toys.
In contrast, the girls in the youngest infant group spend the same proportion of time as they play with kitchen toys. Whether it is a boy or a girl, there is no interest in teddy bears.
Boys and girls in 18 months also have different preferences for toys because of their gender. This finding shows that gender has an impact on toy preferences before starting a wider social interaction. But such a tendency may also be corrected. As the child grows, they will label themselves and boys and learn more social norms.
Our research also found that as the age increases, the interest of the boy in the “male category†will gradually increase, while the girls group will present different patterns. Although girls of all ages prefer the “female category†of toys, the youngest group has the strongest tendencies. And when boys and girls are close to 3 years old, their interest in the "male category" of toys has increased. This raises questions about the existing "toy sex" hypothesis. What exactly is the real "boy toy" or "girl toy"?
Therefore, in addition to discovering the different preferences of children of different genders for toys, we also found differences in the development path between boys and girls. We can only speculate that, at least in the area we study, the mindset of a boy may be more stubborn than the mindset of a girl. In modern society, girls are more often encouraged to play "male-category" toys, rather than encouraging boys to play some role in caring for others.
Of course, there are some boys and girls in our research who don't choose typical "boy" or "girl" toys, so when choosing toys for children, it's best to keep the idea that each child is independent. Individual.
