Augmented reality mobile application FEBCAD AR makes 3D modeling easier

Despite its many advantages, 3D printing has a huge drawback: it is very difficult to learn when it comes to design. More importantly, this is an important obstacle that hinders its widespread use. While many companies are working hard to make 3D designs easier to use, Swedish startup Febtop Tech has found a very effective solution. They are currently working on the Febcad AR app, a smartphone-based solution that allows users to use augmented reality environments and objects around them, and draw designs based on basic shapes.

This interesting concept was developed about a year ago and was later developed by a team led by Tom Yang and Simon Karlsson. As early as 2006, Yang studied his Ph.D. in biology at the University of Bath. In the same lab, Dr. Adrian Bowyer developed RepRap 3D printing technology. Since then he has always liked 3D printing, even though he never found the 3D printer he wanted. So, two years ago, Yang decided to work with Swedish physicist and senior creator Simon Karlsson to solve the problem personally.

So how does FEBCAD AR work? In short, it needs to get a 3D design from your browser and store it on your phone. With this app, you can draw basic shapes (from boxes, cylinders, pyramids, spheres, cones, etc.) on the table in front of you, and adjust the angle, size, etc.

Most AR applications are only used to view the model, so FEBCAD AR does more. In addition, the user can also draw 2D graphics by hand and convert them into 3D, rotate the graphics around various axes and move them freely. More importantly, users can also import STL files to view. “When you feel that your design is complete, you can export the 3D model to the STL format,” the manufacturer said. “Using AR technology, we are working hard to reduce the barriers for new designers and makers to enter the 3D printing arena. We are working with schools and educators to make 3D printing easier to use.”

This interesting design solution has been developed for about three months, and the initial release will only be available for Android devices, and additional platforms will be added in subsequent releases. It is understood that Febtop Tech is currently available for two 3D printers - Optimus and Nimo 3D printers - which are also designed by the development team. Users can send print jobs directly to the 3D printer via the App.

By the way, those 3D printers look promising too. The Optimus will be the flagship model, a powerful, modular, almost complete metal machine for a variety of applications. “First you can assemble it into a delta-like structure that will give you a cylindrical print volume. In less than 10 minutes, you can reinstall the printer into a Cartesian design with a rectangular print volume, so that You can print larger and wider things, but there are limits on height," the designer said. “In both configurations, you can interchange tools to change the function of the machine, such as turning it into a laser cutter or CNC milling machine. Of course, laser cutters and CNC milling machines are more suitable for Cartesian structures. ”

The Optimus 3D printer is said to be used by (professional) makers, product designers, engineers and artists to provide them with very good 3D print quality, while Nimo 3D is a small (100 x 100 x 100 mm build) Space), low price, easy to use version. “Once delivered, you take the machine out of the package, plug it in, turn on the switch, enter your model and start printing,” the manufacturer said. “We think that Nimo3D can be used as a device for playing and learning, reducing the difficulty for beginners to learn 3D printing. For the school, it is used as an introductory tool for the education industry, which can help students learn 3D printing perfectly, and also Make learning experiences more creative and interesting."

However, regardless of whether the FEBCAD AR application or the 3D printer is currently not in the practical stage, the Swedish team is working hard to achieve this. "We have no plans to patent anything. Our goal is to release applications and source code with an open source license and hope to build a community around the app," they said. The app will also be bundled with 3D printers, but they are completely open source.
