Guide
The efficacy of lactic acid bacteria in the stomach and intestines is well known. Recently, it has added a new aura. A study led by Georgia State University found that lactic acid bacteria can also prevent different subtypes of influenza A virus from being caused by virus infection. Weight loss and reduced replication of lung viruses.

"The enemy" is very embarrass
In the winter, it has reached the high incidence of influenza. Although the seasonal influenza virus vaccine is well developed, it is only effective when the vaccine strain and the prevalent influenza virus are exhausted.
Influenza A virus is the most susceptible to variability, has high pathogenicity to humans, and has caused worldwide pandemics. Based on the surface of the virus, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins, which have many different subtypes. According to statistics, influenza A virus has 18 different HAs and 11 different NA subtypes, which means that there are many combinations of HA and NA influenza viruses. Therefore, regardless of the strain, it is important to find ways to prevent a wide range of influenza viruses.
A recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports shows that some lactic acid bacteria can prevent bacterial infections such as pneumococcal, cold and flu. The researchers investigated the protective effect of heat-killed lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus casei casei DK128 (DK128, a probiotic isolated from fermented vegetables) against influenza virus.
"Our army" is more powerful
The researchers pretreated the mice with DK128 and infected them with the influenza A virus. The results showed that the mice developed an immune response against the influenza virus. Specifically, it includes an increase in alveolar macrophages in the lungs and respiratory tract, early induction of virus-specific antibodies, and reduction in levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and innate immune cells.
Dr. Sang-Moo Kang, the lead author of the study, said: "Our findings are very meaningful because mice pretreated with DK128 maintain 100% survival and there is no weight loss. This lactic acid bacteria also Provides cross-protective immunity to mice to prevent secondary fatal infections."
The researchers then conducted a control experiment and infected mice with a lethal dose of influenza A virus H3N2 or H1N1 subtype. The results showed that mice treated with low doses of DK128 lost 10-12% of their body weight but survived the lethal infection of H3N2 or H1N1 virus. In contrast, mice pretreated with higher doses of DK128 did not experience weight loss. The control mice did not receive pretreatment with DK128, and the body weight decreased significantly on the 8th and 9th day of infection, followed by total death.
Moreover, it is worth noting that mice treated with lactic acid bacteria (DK128) had a lung infection of 18 times lower than that of the control group.
The researchers also used H1N1 or rgH5N1 to test the protective effect of lactic acid bacteria on secondary viral infections. The results showed that pretreatment with lactic acid bacteria, especially DK128, gave mice a protective immunity against a wide range of primary and secondary influenza A virus infections.
This means that DK128 can be used as a drug to prevent specific influenza virus infections by nasal sprays.
